Games, burgers, music highlight fifth Library Days celebration

Thanks to a generous grant from local computer mapping firm Esri, the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands will host its 5th annual Library Days Celebration Saturday, June 18.

The theme of this year’s event is the Smiley Summer Games, celebrating the role of sports in our community. A host of fun participatory activities will take place around Smiley Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Frisbee golf, rock climbing, bean bag tossing, free throw shooting and face painting. Back by popular demand to entertain guests is the West Palm Avenue Band. Their classic American rock tunes will be sure to have guests moving their feet. Last but not least, the Library’s Heritage Room will have an exhibit case full of Southern California sports related material from their collection.

Because participating in games can generate hunger, the first 400 guests who participate in any Library Day event (or show their library card at the circulation desk) will get a special treat – a hand stamp good for a free In-N-Out lunch from the In-N-Out truck.

“It’s the Library’s way of saying thank you to everyone who supports our mission of providing information and programming to the community,” observed Library Director Don McCue. “Longtime patrons and new residents alike are encouraged to come to Smiley Library, learn something new, enjoy some iconic Southern California burgers, and listen to some great music. Staff and volunteers have been working diligently to put on a great event!”

Located at 125 W. Vine St., the Smiley Library is a National Historic Register Landmark building that serves as the public library for the city of Redlands. For further information, check the library's website
