Lane restrictions on Pearl Avenue for Gateway beautification

Lane restrictions on Pearl Avenue for Gateway beautification
Posted on 03/02/2017

Lane restrictions will be in place for approximately three days beginning Monday, March 6, along Pearl Avenue between Eureka Street and 6th Street while contractors construct an electrical crossing at Orange Street and Pearl Avenue to establish irrigation control for the I-10 Gateway Entry Landscape Beautification Project.

Two lanes of travel will be open at all times during the lane restrictions and detours will be in place to facilitate traffic flow throughout the project area. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for travel or use an alternate route.

On July 31, 2015, the City Council approved a revised conceptual design for the I-10 Gateway Entry Landscape Beautification Project. The project consists of aesthetic improvements within the Caltrans right-of-way at the on and off ramps to Interstate 10 in downtown Redlands at Sixth Street, Orange Street and Eureka Street. Project improvements include drought tolerant vegetation, decorative sign structures, stem walls, stone veneered columns, wire mesh fencing and orange crate style planter boxes.

The Gateway Entry Landscape Beautification Project is part of the City’s efforts to beautify and improve Historic Downtown Redlands. Recent enhancements have included beautification of the Gateway underpasses, including new paint and lighting as well as large murals depicting historic Redlands buildings and orange crate labels.

Other improvements include the Orange Street Alley Pedestrian Enhancement project, new planter features and stylistic bicycle racks on State Street and other downtown locations and new lighting in the downtown corridor.

The improvements are designed to enhance the City’s Historic Downtown, attract visitors, retain existing businesses and attract new ones.

Funding for this project comes from proceeds from the sale of the Palmetto Grove, which were designated for the care and maintenance of open space throughout the City. No General Funds will be expended for this project.
