New crosswalk improvements at Redlands Boulevard and Fifth Street

The City of Redlands has completed two pedestrian crossing improvements along Redlands Boulevard at Fifth and Seventh streets. Five more crosswalk improvements will be constructed on Redlands Boulevard at Ninth, State and Clark streets; on Orange Street and Shoppers Lane; and on Citrus Avenue at Central Avenue.

The improvements include in-roadway lighting, thermoplastic crosswalk striping and additional reflective signage at the uncontrolled intersections on Redlands Boulevard at Fifth, Seventh, Ninth, State and Clark streets, along with Orange Street and Shoppers Lane and Citrus Avenue at Central Avenue.

Motorists approaching any of the intersections are required to slow to a stop at the designated limit line if they see flashing lights and look for pedestrians. Drivers should be sure that all pedestrians have safely crossed the street before carefully proceeding.

Pedestrians are also reminded to exercise caution at all times, especially when crossing the street. Always check for oncoming traffic. Be sure not to make sudden moves into a crosswalk whether marked or unmarked and be sure that drivers can see you. When possible, cross at a signalized intersection and be sure to follow all traffic directions and signals. Pedestrians may be cited when they fail to exercise appropriate caution, deliberately delay traffic or cross outside a marked crosswalk between adjacent signalized intersections.

The improvements are part of a $324,743 Highway Safety Improvement Program Cycle 7 – Uncontrolled Pedestrian Crossing Safety Enhancement Project contract awarded to California Professional Engineering, Inc., of La Puente, by the City Council on September 17, 2019.

Construction of all seven sites is expected to take about six weeks. Work will be performed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic lanes will remain open in all directions but motorists should expect delays. No parking signs will be posted 48 hours in advance of construction activities commencing. The City will work to minimize impacts to businesses and residences as much as possible.
