Career education and planning workshop for teens, parents
“Being Deliberate,” a free career education and planning workshop for teens and their parents, will be held at the A.K. Smiley Public Library from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.
Lack of exposure means lack of choices. In her presentation Jamie Beck, former CSU Career Counselor and frequent presenter of “Career Vision: An Employment Bootcamp” at the Smiley Library and other local libraries in Southern California, encourages students to be deliberate in all areas of their lives as a way of creating their own career education curricula in order to increase their exposure as a way of expanding their options and choices in life.
Through her nontraditional techniques rooted in a holistic view of work in which work is not separate from who we are, students from eighth grade through college freshman will develop strategies to make school a living and breathing experience in career exploration rather than random fact memorization in order to gain a piece of paper.
From encouraging would-be veterinarians to spend the weekend with a frozen turkey, gizzards and all, to begging future doctors of America to get a copy of the MCAT now so they can fully understand that there is more chemistry than the physical chemistry on “Grey’s Anatomy” taking place in the ER, students will also discover their strengths and weaknesses, explore their interests, and begin thinking about how to choose a major, select a college campus, and toss the idea of choosing a career out the window and instead, focus on determining their “I AM” and where they want to work, not what they want to be.
Based on her research, Beck is convinced that children in America know more about extinct dinosaurs and endangered animals than they do about people in their own community, and even their own parents when it comes to the work they perform.
“When you have 80 percent of college students changing their major nationwide and then ‘marrying a major’ based on a ‘single date,’ something is wrong,” she says.
Beck gives her audience a real life perspective on how to make the most of high school and college to ensure they have been exposed to all their career options and they don’t end up like a “trained elephant.” From tattoos to cutie marks and from Barbie bashing to Junk Food Jobs, her presentation is candid, humorous, and practical, giving students and their parents workable habits to develop to ensure a proactive approach to high school, college, and beyond.
Don’t miss this opportunity as a family to learn to be deliberate and take charge of your career education this fall in order to make the most of the 2012-2013 school year. This workshop is generously provided by the friends of the AK Smiley Public Library and light refreshments will be served.
The A.K. Smiley Public Library is located at 125 W. Vine St. For more information, call the library at (909) 798-7565.
