March 1, 2018 - The second phase of construction and installation of airport lighting and signage improvements began Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Redlands Airport, 1755 Sessums Drive. The current phase will include refurbishment and conversion of remaining lights and signage, upgrades to the pilot navigational aids, wind socks and replacement of the airport beacon.

The work is expected to take up to two months to complete. A nighttime closure of one runway is expected but the date has not been determined. Some of the runway and traffic pattern/navigational lighting will be inoperative during portions of the construction. Notices have been sent to aviators using the airport.

FAA Airport Improvement Program funding of $150,000 will fund this phase of rehabilitation of the airfield lighting and navigational aids serving one runway and taxiway at the airport. The City will provide matching funds of $16,667.

On Nov. 7, 2017, the City Council awarded a construction contract to RB Development of Big Bear City. RB Development performed earlier work for the first phase which included replacement of existing taxiway lights and other electrical work, construction of new holding position signs along the runway and taxiway guidance signs, and replacement of runway edge and threshold lights.

The project was designed by WSP USA Inc. Project management will be overseen by the City of Redlands Quality of Life Department in conjunction with the Municipal Utilities and Engineering Department. The City will make a concerted effort to minimize disruptions for airport patrons and residents in the surrounding area. A Notice to All Airmen was filed and will be amended as required to ensure accurate information is available to pilots.

Members of the aviation community and residents may direct questions to Will Hamilton, Airport Supervisor for the Quality of Life Department, at or by phone at (909) 798-7655.
