Redlands Police arrested a 56-year-old high school teacher Tuesday evening, accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student.

Kevin Patrick Kirkland, of Rancho Cucamonga, was arrested at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, in Gilbert, Ariz. Kirkland is a math teacher at Redlands High School.

Kirkland was placed on administrative leave by the Redlands Unified School District in April 2016 after administrators at the district contacted police regarding possible inappropriate behavior by Kirkland toward another student. A police investigation at that time determined that the reported behavior was not criminal.

Redlands Police opened a new investigation after school district administrators reported additional possible inappropriate behavior between Kirkland and a second student. After conducting an extensive investigation, detectives determined Kirkland had engaged in multiple unlawful sexual encounters with the student from the time she was 16 until March 2016 when the student was 18.

Detectives worked with authorities from the Gilbert, Ariz., Police Department and took Kirkland into custody on a Ramey warrant. After reviewing the case, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed five counts of oral copulation of a minor and one count of distributing harmful matter to a minor. Kirkland waived extradition and RPD detectives brought Kirkland to San Bernardino County where he was booked into the West Valley Detention Center Thursday with a bail of $2 million.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Detective Kelli Bishop at kbishop@redlandspolice.org or Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681.
