Arson suspected in weekend residential structure fire

Arson was determined as the cause of a residential structure fire in the 1100 block of Alta Street Saturday evening. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Arriving firefighters found fire and heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters initiated a quick attack on the blaze and began searching the structure for any occupants. It took 18 firefighters about 10 minutes to knock down the fire. Firefighters remained on scene until about 8:15 p.m. to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and conduct an investigation.

The fire originated in a bedroom and the cause was determined to be arson. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and it was no longer inhabitable. Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $120,000. The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance to the residents. There was also about $4,000 of damage to a neighboring home and utility lines.

The Redlands Fire Department was assisted on the fire by San Bernardino County Medic Engine 9, and Loma Linda Medic Engine 252 assisted with covering other calls during the incident. Redlands Police assisted, shutting down the street so firefighters could operate safely.
